Why I Started Miles of Melodies: A Brand Rooted on Purposeful Creation and Consumption

Hi there, and welcome to MilesofMelodies, a small “brand” I started where sustainability meets intentional design. As I continue on this venture, I figured I’d share my decision behind it and bring you along my journey.

MilesofMelodies was born from a familiar feeling: the frustration of never quite finding the bag in my life. The one that doesn’t just carry my keys and wallet and phone and a never ending collection of lip products, but one that actually molded to my life. One that understood that I juggled a million things from keys, snacks, chargers, or even a rogue scrunchie or two, and that I still wanted to feel put-together, grounded, and me.

For me, every bag I bought was a compromise: too many pockets or not enough, too structured or too floppy, so beautiful that I couldn’t wear it. And then, somewhere between wiping toddler hands at the grocery store and digging for my keys, I realized I could just make what I needed. Not just for me, but for others feeling the same way.

The heart of this brand lives in my biggest inspirations: my kids. Through them, I see the kind of world I want to help build; one that is slower, more thoughtful, less wasteful, and appreciative of creatives. A world where we value the things we use every day, and truly take time to use what we have before moving on. A world where personal style isn’t defined by the next big (yet fleeting) trend, but by what resonates with each person.

But that’s only part of the story.

Making quality and thoughtful design accessible is a huge driving force for me. I’m grateful to be lucky enough to splurge on a luxury item or two, and I know what it feels like to own something really well made. But I also firmly believe that functional, beautiful pieces shouldn’t just be reserved for those with luxury-sized budgets.

Because I have a full-time job that covers my everyday life, I get to treat this as a passion project. That means I don’t price my work just to maximize profits and churn out design after design. My pricing is to cover the materials, time, and heart that go into each piece, while trying my best to keep things as affordable as I reasonably can. I want this work to be within people’s reach and not just aspirational.

I make every bag at night, once the house is quiet, the dishes are done, the litterboxes have been cleaned, and the stories have been read. And maybe that’s what makes this feel so special: it’s slow, it’s soulful, and it’s stitched with intention. I don’t design more than what’s necessary, make more than what I can handle, or buy more materials than what’s demanded.

Each design begins as a sketch. I prototype it myself, test it out for weeks, and only list it on Etsy once I’m truly satisfied. This isn’t meant to be fast fashion; it’s slow for a reason, and above all, personal to you.

I have always believed in respecting the hands that make, in being mindful of what we consume in our lives, and in leaving the planet just a bit better for the ones coming after us. That’s why every MilesofMelodies piece is handmade by me, intentional, and created to adapt to you.

Whether you’re here because you love slow fashion, believe in mindful craftsmanship, or simply need a bag that finally speaks to you, I’m so glad you’re here.

I love this idea – can’t wait to see the types of bags you make! I’ve had the same feeling where a bag just doesn’t feel quite right for me. I’m so excited to see your designs and hopefully buy one when you start selling! Please remind us when the Etsy shop is up!
