Every bag has a story, and this one begins with a simple sketch and a wonderful conversation when a client approached me with her idea for a custom tote.
Step 1: Listening and Imagining
My first step was to understand her and her needs: the colors she loves, the items she carries every day, and the little details that make her smile. With this information in mind, I began to imagine a bag that would be both functional and uniquely suited for her.
Step 2: Sketching the Vision
Pencil met paper as I brought the concept to life. Sketching allows me to explore shapes, pockets, and patterns, ensuring every element serves a purpose. It’s a dance between creativity and practicality, aiming to craft a bag that’s as beautiful as it is useful.
Once I was happy with my sketchpad, it was time to transfer that to a cleaner version on my iPad. I began the process all over again, this time drawing in a way that she would understand as well.
Step 3: Selecting the Materials
Choosing the right fabrics is like picking the perfect ingredients for a recipe. I sifted through my collection, seeking textures and colors that resonated with her style. I went to my nearby fabric store to further find the perfect material (brought my notes with me so I wouldn’t forget a single detail!). I knew texture and color were important to her, so I wanted to make sure I found the perfect pairing.
Step 4: Sharing and Refining
Once the sketch and fabric samples were ready, I digitized and shared it with my client for feedback. Her insights are invaluable. At the end of the day, this bag is for her so I wanted to make sure she felt comfortable with every aspect. No “tweak” is too small. This collaborative process ensures the end product is not just handmade, but heart-made.
Step 5: Crafting the Prototype
With the design and materials set, I moved to the sewing machine. This phase is where the fun happens, stitches form the structure, batting drives me up a wall, seams give shape, and details adding character. It’s a labor of love, where every thread weaves a part of the story.
Stay tuned as this tote evolves from concept to reality. I’ll be documenting the process 🙂
